An English fog outside the window.

West of Ireland distances on canvas.

My mother settling the palette to her left,

putting her thumb in the opening,

reaching for the brush in its jar.

What would I do if I found it now?

That sable brush that began its journey

on the back of a weasel at the center

of a Siberian wood and then migrated

from there to the wing of a cormorant

laced with cold Atlantic water.

I would use it, I am sure of this,

to unsay my own evening, or at least

those parts of it that could be unsaid.

Granite. Ocean grit. Distance.
